Teachers constantly strive to be students, improving their teaching skills and updating their knowledge. The Christa McAuliffe Academy, a program of the Fox Cities Chamber of Commerce and Industry, strives to provide a professional, invigorating, and educational learning experience for K-12 teachers. The McAuliffe Academy does this especially in the areas of math, science and technology education, in keeping with the directives of the Wisconsin Academy Staff Development Initiative (WASDI)

The Wisconsin Academy Staff Development Initiative (WASDI) provides state of the art staff development for teachers throughout Wisconsin, primarily in the areas of mathematics, science, and technology education. The project has concentrated on the development of leadership in the teaching community and on providing geographically close, high quality professional development for Wisconsin teachers.

The Fox Cities Chamber of Commerce will be holding its thirteenth annual Christa McAuliffe Academy from July 14 through July 18. Opening the week-long event will be the keynote address on Monday, July 14 at 9 a.m. given by Dr. Matt Larson, author-in-residence at Houghton Mifflin company. The title of his presentation is Do We Have an “Achievement” Gap---or an “Instructional” Gap? During this session he will dispel persistent myths and examine important findings from the research community that can be implemented in schools and districts to close the instructional gap.

The McAuliffe Academy is unique because of its business partnership component. Companies from the Fox Cities area support the Academy by agreeing to serve on its advisory committee, and by participating in a special day in the middle of the Academy week. Teachers who participate in the course of study for the week can earn graduate credits form the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and satisfy requirements for professional development.
